Skin Care Confessions

The truth is out and I'm not even hiding from it. The reality of it is, people are obsessing over their skin more today than ever before; me included!

When my skin looks radiant and flawless, I feel beautiful and confident. I think looking good and feeling good kind of go hand in hand. Beauty comes in all forms but it's our inner diva that kicks us into feel good mode when we "feel" like we look out best. But what does "looking" our best look like exactly?

Well, that my dear, depends on what makes you feel good. When you feel good, you tend to shine a little brighter, stand a little taller and exude a little more confidence.

I'm all over that, and then some!

Over the past few years, since turning 40, I've really started to take my skin care more seriously. I mean, 40 is supposed to be the new 30 right? Have a few wrinkles made a cozy home on my face? Hell yes! I'm also okay with slowing the wrinkle process down a bit. I mean honey, my wrinkles showcase an abundance of laughter and living but I also need to get a serious handle on it.

The good news is, there's always time to start a great skin care regimen, including a few units of Botox here and there. There really is no shame in the Botox game...anymore!

I had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie from Allure Medical Aesthetics and can I tell you, I'm pretty certain I've found my new favourite Medi Spa. Stephanie is a no bullsh*t kinda gal. She knows her trade, she specializes in the newest techniques AND she isn't out to soak you for all you've got. Her approach to beauty is simple and never overdone. Stephanie believes in enhancing your natural beauty with minimal product so you never look overdone or unnatural. She kinda known as The Honest Injector.

Her location is conveniently located at 605 Concession Street on the picturesque mountain brow in Hamilton. An abundant of street parking is available for easy accessibility anytime of the day.

Some people will flat out disagree with injections and that's okay too. Finding "your" beautiful is different for everyone.

I get a lot of questions about the products I use, what my skin type is like, what I recommend to keep a natural youthful look and whether or not I use Botox injections.

Here's what I know:

Skin type will often dictate the type of product one should be using so, knowing your skin really helps with choosing the right products. But, it really doesn't stop there. Talk to your trusted Esthetician or your Dermatologist on what is right for your skin type AND take a good hard look at your nutrition. What you put into your body matters and will mirror onto your skin.

My skin tends to be on the dry side so my regimen might not be right for you, or it might just be the magic you've been looking for.

Welcome to my Skin Care Confessions!

STAY HYDRATED

This is a fundamental step in good health. I believe that keeping your body hydrated also keeps your skin glowing and fresh looking. I like to put organic sliced lemons into my room temperature water. I'm not a super cold beverage drinking kinda gal so rarely do I add ice cubes to my drinks. Besides, room temperature water allows our bodies to re-hydrate faster because our bodies absorb it more quickly. I try to consume 8 cups of water a day. Did you know drinking 8 cups of water a day could help you burn up to 64 extra calories? Yup, burn calories while hydrating. It's a total win/win.

GET VORACIOUS WITH YOUR VEGGIES

Popeye was right when he said "I'm strong to the finish cause I eat my spinach" and it's still true to this day. Vegetables contain powerful antioxidants that help protect skin from cellular damage caused by free radicals. It is important to eat a rainbow of colourful vegetables to maintain skin cell development and healthy skin tone. After adjusting your eating habits to mostly plant based, don't get discouraged if you're not noticing an immediate change. It takes a good six weeks for new skin to emerge up to the surface so the visible benefits from the dietary changes can take just as long.

SOAK YOUR WAY TO RELAX MODE

Setting relaxation time aside for yourself is just as important as hydration and nutrition. As a busy Mom of 3, I make the time to get my soak in. Mental health is often overlooked when we think of nutrition but in the grand scope of things, our mental health is the foundation of how we "feel." I strongly encourage everyone to schedule some ME time into your day. For me, a nice 20 minute soak in the tub helps to relax my body, my mind and my soul. Epsom salts (I use citrus infused) helps to relax my aching body. Quiet meditation helps slow my racing thoughts and affirming my daily gratitude helps to keep my soul strong. So, the next time you're having a hectic day, grab yourself a tall glass of H20 and soak up all the goodness a hot bath has to offer.

ALUMIER MD HYDRA TREATMENT

I am new to this product but man-o-man do I ever love it. The purifying gel cleanser is a serious facial in a tube. My skin feels squeaky clean and incredibly soft, even after the first use. The HydraDew Moisturizer is a little bit of Heaven for your skin. I finish my treatment off with the eye serum designed specifically to help reduce the appearance of fine lines. I always top off my skin routine with a minimum 40 SPF. If I know I'm going to be in the sun for a longer period, I will apply an SPF 110 from Neutrogena Ultra Sheer. It's dry-touch with helioplex photostable - UVA/UVB protection. Of course it's ultra light, quick absorbing and dermatologist recommended.

New to my regime is the Revanesse Kiss. I'm kind of a chronic lip balm user. This particular product is designed to volumize and augment lips (without injections).

Good products, good health and a few units of Botox is my secret. Don't be afraid to try out new products, even if the ones you're using now are working just fine. Switching up your product line can be a blessing in disguise. You can often get samples of products to try, and if you don't love them, you can always stay with your current trusted products.

Stay fresh, stay healthy.

Always with Love,

Joanne
